James Morris – More fallow and a fat piggy

This weekend I went and got my game camera back out of the forest of Fallow deer, and while there managed to snuffle a fat young piggy for the freezer… I’ll let the photo’s tell the story.

Fat little piggy

And I got to try out my new Hunters Element skinning knife

It did a cracker job getting the skin off the hog and the back legs and back steaks out and into my pack-there was no point in taking the front end for meat after it had been hit with my 30.06!

Hopefully in it’s new spot, my game cam will get some pics of some red deer!

GASPO ITALY – ITALIAN FOOTWEAR 1/4

GASPO

Last year I went searching for a maker of heavy duty hunting boots suitable for New Zealand’s rugged conditions. My search took me to a small village at the base of the mighty Dolomite Mountain Range in Northern Italy.

Mario Gasparetto started hand crafting boots in the small Italian village of Cornuda in 1967. GASPO boots are meticulously hand crafted from the finest Italian materials and are designed for the hikers, mountaineers and hunters chasing wild game in the Dolomites.

Guido Gasparetto, Mario’s son, has now taken over the family business. Guido has 30 years experience making boots in Italy and Eastern Europe. Despite Guido formally taking over the running of the business Mario still makes boots today at the age of 70. What impressed me was the passion Guido and Mario have for making quality boots. Guido personally  follows the process of the boot from concept, material sourcing, cutting, stitching, lasting to attaching the sole. This is what makes Gaspo boots special, they are handcrafted in a small Italian factory where only the best is good enough. When you see and feel these boots you will understand the difference between Gaspo and some of the larger mass produced boots.

We have asked GASPO to make us a range of boots to suit New Zealand and Australia’s hunting conditions. GASPO have developed the Alpi Boot and Upland boot for us and are currently working on a few more models for release later on the in year.

GASPO boots are made with the highest quality materials including Italian Husky leather, Vibram soles and the ground breaking Outdry waterproofing system. (I am sorry but you will have to wait until post four to understand why Outdry is totally unique and is revolutionising the footwear industry).

Alex Broad – This has to be seen!

If you ever wanted to hunt in Africa, or go mountain biking over there, you’d better check this vid out:

And always wear a helmet……….

Alex Broad – Boxers or Briefs?

We can harp on about layering systems, base layers, wicking etc all we want, but the simple fact is most of us are not wearing technical underwear to match the technical base layers we throw on over the top.

The 5 packs of cotton underwear we often receive at Christmas don’t do our base layers justice when we are out and about in hills.  Cotton absorbs moisture leaving us damp, uncomfortable and often chaffed.

Hunters Element is about to remedy this, but before we can release some technical underwear we need to know what do our customers prefer, tight fitting sport style boxer shorts or briefs?

James Morris – Trail Cam

The start of the year is always an exciting time waiting for the stags and bucks to grow their antlers out.

This year I have set up a game camera to see what is lurking about in an area I like to hunt, and had a pleasant surprise to find in ten days my camera was out it caught images of a stag, a buck, a doe and a pig! With so much feed about this year, I am hoping that the next time I go and get my camera it has some photos of older stags and bucks with good amounts of antler!
